The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the most widely recognized standardized test to evaluate and certify the Japanese language proficiency of non-native speakers. Whether you're aiming to work in Japan, apply for a scholarship, or simply challenge yourself in language learning, JLPT is a globally respected qualification.

The JLPT evaluates your practical Japanese language skills, with a focus on the following three areas:

• Language Knowledge 
  Vocabulary, kanji, and grammar comprehension. 

• Reading 
  Understanding of passages, notices, and written information in Japanese. 

• Listening 
  Ability to understand spoken Japanese in conversations, announcements, and other real-life situations. 

*JLPT does not test speaking or writing skills.

The JLPT has five levels, from N5 (easiest) to N1 (most advanced). Here's a breakdown: 

Each level includes these components:

• Vocabulary and Grammar (Language Knowledge) 

• Reading Comprehension 

• Listening Comprehension 

The higher the level, the longer and more complex the sections become. For example: 

• N5 exam total time: ~90 minutes

• N1 exam total time: ~170 minutes

JLPT uses a scaled scoring system. To pass, you need to meet the: 

• Overall score threshold 

• Minimum score for each section 

For example, to pass N3: 

• Total score: 95/180 

• Minimum score per section: ~19 points

• Find a Japanese class near you (like MariMari NihonGO in Kota Damansara)

• Use textbooks like Genki, Minna no Nihongo, or Try! JLPT 

• Practice with official JLPT mock tests 

• Watch videos covering the listening aspect of the exam and read real Japanese texts

Registrations open up around 3 months before the exam dates, so make sure to regularly check the websites for updates as exam slots are limited.

• Plan your study time according to your level.

• If self-study feels challenging, consider joining a class with guidance from a teacher (classes available in Kota Damansara!).

• Register early—slots fill quickly, especially in countries like Malaysia, Vietnam, or Thailand. 

• Even if you're not ready to pass, taking the test is a great benchmark for your progress!
